This month, Waitrose join supermarket giants, Tesco and M&S, in an attempt to reduce food waste by removing best-before dates on fresh food produce.
The idea behind this change is to encourage shoppers to use their own judgment as to whether the food is still good to eat, so that unnecessary food waste can be avoided.
In January, Morrisons supermarket prompted their customers to use a ‘sniff test,’ when they removed the best before dates from their own brand milk.
Food waste facts
- Over 1/3 of all food produced globally goes to waste.
- Despite 8.4 million people in the UK living in food poverty, The Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) says 5 million tonnes of edible food is thrown away each year.
Why is food waste problematic?
- A great deal of food waste continues to be disposed of in landfill, releasing methane a major contributor to global warming.
